This week in class, we each took the O*Net interest profiler assessment to help us find a career that aligns with our individual interests. I will say, the quiz was lengthy and I did find myself wanting to put ‘unsure’ for some of the questions, but in the end, I was satisfied with my results.
Upon completing the assessment, my highest interest score surprised me. I thought my highest score would be either social or artistic, but it ended up being ‘enterprising’. I’ve never thought of myself as an enterprising person, but I do believe I tend to show a lot of initiative and resourcefulness, so I guess the shoe fits.
After finding out my highest interest, I had to pick a job zone I was interested in. Job zones are determined mainly by the amount of schooling you wish to pursue, and if I remember correctly, there were five job zones (ranging from least to most schooling), and I chose job zone number four. Finally, I was shown my most fitting career, an advertising and promotions manager.
According to “My Next Move”, advertising and promotions managers “Plan, direct, or coordinate advertising policies and programs or produce collateral materials, such as posters, contests, coupons, or giveaways, to create extra interest in the purchase of a product or service for a department, an entire organization, or on an account basis”. This is definitely something I could be interested in. As a Media and Communications major, I already knew I wanted to pursue a career in communications, and I was mainly looking at PR, but now that advertising has been brought to my attention, I’m beginning to consider that as well.
As a freshman, I still have a lot of time to decide what I want my career to be, and I might change my mind over and over again, and I have to remember, that’s okay. College serves as an institution to not only educate but to help students explore a plethora of career options, and that’s what I intend to do.
